This guide explains how to add your hosted email account to the Gmail app on an Android phone or tablet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gmail app can be used for both Gmail and non-Gmail email accounts. For our mailboxes, we recommend using IMAP<\/strong>, as this keeps your email synced across your phone, webmail, and any other devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you begin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You will need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Your full email address, for example yourname@yourdomain.com<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Your mailbox password<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Your incoming and outgoing mail server settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    For most cPanel mailboxes, the settings are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Replace yourdomain.com<\/code> with your actual domain name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Select IMAP, using port 993<\/strong> with SSL for incoming mail and port 465<\/strong> with SSL for outgoing SMTP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open the Gmail app<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail<\/strong> app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you do not already have Gmail installed, download it from the Google Play Store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    2. Open the account menu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Tap your profile picture or initials<\/strong> in the top-right corner of the Gmail app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    3. Tap \u201cAdd another account\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    From the account menu, tap Add another account<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    4. Choose \u201cOther\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When asked to choose the type of account, select Other<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    5. Enter your email address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Enter your full email address, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    yourname@yourdomain.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tap Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    6. Choose \u201cPersonal (IMAP)\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When asked what type of account this is, choose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Personal (IMAP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We recommend IMAP because it syncs your mailbox with the mail server. This means messages remain available in webmail and on your other devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Avoid POP3 unless you specifically need it. POP3 downloads mail to one device and is usually not the best choice when checking email on multiple devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    7. Enter your mailbox password<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Enter the password for your email mailbox, then tap Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is the password for the email account itself, not necessarily the password for your CloudAbove client area or cPanel login.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    8. Check the incoming server settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Gmail should now ask for the incoming server settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Use the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tap Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    9. Check the outgoing server settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Next, Gmail will ask for the outgoing server settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Use the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Security type<\/td>SSL\/TLS<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    Tap Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    10. Choose your account options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Gmail may ask how often to sync your email and whether to show notifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Choose the options you prefer, then tap Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    11. Name the account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    You may be asked to enter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • An account name, such as Work Email<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Your name, which appears on messages you send<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Enter the details you want to use, then tap Next<\/strong> or Done<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Your email account should now be added to the Gmail app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Troubleshooting<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

      Gmail says it cannot connect to the server<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Check that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Your email address is entered in full<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Your password is correct<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The server is mail.yourdomain.com<\/code>, using your real domain name<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • IMAP is using port 993<\/code> with SSL\/TLS<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • SMTP is using port 465<\/code> with SSL\/TLS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        You can receive email but cannot send<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        This usually means the outgoing SMTP settings are incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Make sure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • Require sign-in<\/strong> is enabled<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The SMTP username is your full email address<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The SMTP password is your mailbox password<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The SMTP server is mail.yourdomain.com<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The SMTP port is 465<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Security is set to SSL\/TLS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          CloudAbove notes that outgoing username and password may appear optional in some mail apps, but they are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          You cannot see new mail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Try the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          • Pull down in the Gmail app to refresh manually<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Check your internet connection<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Confirm sync is enabled for the account<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Make sure the mailbox is not over quota<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
