Why SSL Certificates Are Now Valid for 199 Days
Overview
You may notice that newly issued SSL certificates are now valid for 199 days instead of 365 days.
This is part of an industry-wide change introduced by Certificate Authorities (such as Sectigo and DigiCert) to improve security standards across the internet.
Why has this changed?
SSL certificates are being issued for shorter periods to:
- improve overall internet security
- reduce the risk of compromised certificates
- encourage more frequent validation of domain ownership
This change applies globally and affects all providers.
What does this mean for you?
Even if you have purchased a 12-month SSL certificate, the certificate itself will:
- be issued for 199 days at a time
- need to be reissued during the year to maintain coverage
There is no additional cost for this, your purchase still covers the full period.
Will my website go offline?
Not as long as the certificate is reissued before expiry, your website will remain secure and uninterrupted.
Do I need to do anything?
In most cases:
- you may need to reissue your certificate before it expires
- this ensures continued HTTPS coverage for your domain
