Add your email to the Gmail app for Android
This guide explains how to add your hosted email account to the Gmail app on an Android phone or tablet.
The Gmail app can be used for both Gmail and non-Gmail email accounts. For our mailboxes, we recommend using IMAP, as this keeps your email synced across your phone, webmail, and any other devices.
Before you begin
You will need:
- Your full email address, for example
yourname@yourdomain.com - Your mailbox password
- Your incoming and outgoing mail server settings
For most cPanel mailboxes, the settings are:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Account type | IMAP |
| Username | Your full email address |
| Password | Your mailbox password |
| Incoming server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Incoming port | 993 |
| Incoming security | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Outgoing port | 465 |
| Outgoing security | SSL/TLS |
| Require sign-in | Yes |
Replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name.
Select IMAP, using port 993 with SSL for incoming mail and port 465 with SSL for outgoing SMTP.
1. Open the Gmail app
On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app.
If you do not already have Gmail installed, download it from the Google Play Store.
2. Open the account menu
Tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner of the Gmail app.
3. Tap “Add another account”
From the account menu, tap Add another account.
4. Choose “Other”
When asked to choose the type of account, select Other.
5. Enter your email address
Enter your full email address, for example:
yourname@yourdomain.com
Tap Next.
6. Choose “Personal (IMAP)”
When asked what type of account this is, choose:
Personal (IMAP)
We recommend IMAP because it syncs your mailbox with the mail server. This means messages remain available in webmail and on your other devices.
Avoid POP3 unless you specifically need it. POP3 downloads mail to one device and is usually not the best choice when checking email on multiple devices.
7. Enter your mailbox password
Enter the password for your email mailbox, then tap Next.
This is the password for the email account itself, not necessarily the password for your CloudAbove client area or cPanel login.
8. Check the incoming server settings
Gmail should now ask for the incoming server settings.
Use the following:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Username | Your full email address |
| Password | Your mailbox password |
| Server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Port | 993 |
| Security type | SSL/TLS |
Tap Next.
9. Check the outgoing server settings
Next, Gmail will ask for the outgoing server settings.
Use the following:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Require sign-in | On / Yes |
| Username | Your full email address |
| Password | Your mailbox password |
| SMTP server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Port | 465 |
| Security type | SSL/TLS |
Tap Next.
10. Choose your account options
Gmail may ask how often to sync your email and whether to show notifications.
Choose the options you prefer, then tap Next.
11. Name the account
You may be asked to enter:
- An account name, such as
Work Email - Your name, which appears on messages you send
Enter the details you want to use, then tap Next or Done.
Your email account should now be added to the Gmail app.
Troubleshooting
Gmail says it cannot connect to the server
Check that:
- Your email address is entered in full
- Your password is correct
- The server is
mail.yourdomain.com, using your real domain name - IMAP is using port
993with SSL/TLS - SMTP is using port
465with SSL/TLS
You can receive email but cannot send
This usually means the outgoing SMTP settings are incorrect.
Make sure:
- Require sign-in is enabled
- The SMTP username is your full email address
- The SMTP password is your mailbox password
- The SMTP server is
mail.yourdomain.com - The SMTP port is
465 - Security is set to SSL/TLS
CloudAbove notes that outgoing username and password may appear optional in some mail apps, but they are required.
You cannot see new mail
Try the following:
- Pull down in the Gmail app to refresh manually
- Check your internet connection
- Confirm sync is enabled for the account
- Make sure the mailbox is not over quota
Google’s Gmail Android troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking sync settings, device storage, internet connection, and updating or restarting the app when sync issues occur.
